He'd known it was coming, but Sarah's question still made him freeze, in surprise, and in terror, just a little. You didn't face that and not feel afraid, not if you had two braincells to rub together. Hell, not if you had one.

So when his wife asked him, quietly, soothingly, "Tell me what happened?", he froze and stared at her like a complete moron.

'Er... well, hon, it's... classified," Will answered haltingly. Moron, he berated. Falling back on something so stupid, just because you don't want to talk about it. Be a man, soldier boy! What had his drill sergeant always told him?

Sarah, bless her stubborn, immovable will, just looked at him evenly. It was that look Will alternately loved and feared, sometimes at the same time. That special, female look that meant, "I love you, I support you, now stop being a complete fool and let me help you."

Will, grown man, soldier, captain, father, just managed not to cringe. Instead, he looked away guiltily. He wanted to tell her, all of it, from the moment the video feed had cut off, when he told her, "I love you" desperately, not sure if she could hear him, if this would be the last time he would see her.

As he'd gone outside, there had been the steely determination and the tense not-quite-dread of an unknown enemy. He had thought he was ready for anything. He had thought, "I will take on anything they throw at us. I'll get back to my girls."

He wasn't ready for the Pave Low to change into a giant robot. No, he hadn't been ready for that at all.

Then, there had been only motion, sound and lights against pitch black. So much motion, running, shooting, running, running. So much sound, screams, gunfire, and the sound that wasn't sound, that was a weapon. So many lights, the stars in the sky, the broken powerlines, the shots bouncing off armor.

Somehow, dawn had come. Time had started to move properly again, and Lennox could remember, almost as if it was his memory that had been illuminated.

So, he remembered thinking, the base is gone, destroyed, by an unknown enemy. Your guns have been totally useless, you don't know what it is, you're not sure what it's after, you don't know if it's still following you. But you've got your men. Get to some place safe. Well, safer than the middle of the desert, in the open. Get under cover.

You'll pull through. You always have. You will. You must.

He had expected it to come flying, like a giant, black, metallic bird of prey. Instead, it had come from underground. It came, it disappeared. Guerilla tactics, but better, faster, smarter. It was better, faster, stronger. They were totally outmatched.

And when Sarah asked, "What happened?" all he could say was, "Something... out of this world." And laugh.

It helped. It was good to laugh again.
